It took three attempts to put my own name on the cover. When writing your life story it's difficult to know when to stop. As long as you're alive, you're not done. The first version of my memoirs was called Crawling into the Light. It was my first attempt at writing and it told the story as it happened - brutal, raw and to the level of my understandint at the time.
The second verion was called, Phoenix. The story remained the same but the emphasis was on my rise from the ashes. But stories were true, both reflected my level of awareness at the time. But there was still one more big lessons I had to learn.
It wasn’t until the third iteration that I was ready to do the thing the book was actually about: Just be Marni. This seemingly small act — putting your own name on something, without a metaphor to hide behind — describes the story of my awakening to the truth that was always right in front of me:
Radical Authenticty.

THE STORY
My life, on paper, is not an easy read. Abuse. Rape. Addiction. Homelessness. Prison.
What came next surprised everyone, including me: a multimillion-dollar business. Every visible marker of success was mine. But something was still missing...
And then I found myself on the floor once again.
That night — the lowest point of what looked like my highest point — was the beginning of the only story that actually mattered.
Not the survival. Not the success.
The awakening.
THE TURNING POINT
“Real freedom didn’t come until I discovered what truly matters.”
— MARNI
What I found wasn’t a religion, a therapy, or a program. It was something more structural — a recognition that the version of me the world could see was only a fraction of who I actually was. That the emptiness wasn’t ingratitude or failure. It was information.
The life I had built was real. The success was real. But the suffering was also real. I didn't understand why.
I had been building everything on four percent of myself, and calling it the whole.
MARNI is the story behind what happened when I stopped performing the life I was supposed to want,
and started listening to the one I was actually built for.
WHO THIS IS FOR
This is not a book about how bad things were. It’s a book about what became possible once I stopped letting the hard things define the ceiling.
If you have ever survived something that was supposed to break you —
or achieved something you thought would finally fix you —
this book was written for you.
“It took three attempts to put my own name on the cover. In a way, that small act represents the whole journey.”
— Marni Spencer-Devlin
Three titles. One story.
Crawling into the Light → Phoenix → MARNI
The title changed when I was finally ready to simply be myself.
The journey to Authenticity began here.
